How to Collect Antiques

Wednesday, April 9, 2008

Collecting antiques is a hobby very similar to owning stamps or coins. Some engage in this to make a profit by selling it at a higher price while others simply like to treasure it. Since these could range from dolls to cars, you have to decide first which antique you want to focus on.

If you have decided to go for dolls, you should do some research first by reading about them in books and online. You may even visit a convention so you know what kind of dolls are worth collecting.

The next place you should visit is an antique store given that you won't find them at your local toy store. While you are there, examine the merchandise carefully and talk with the owner. You can ask them where they acquired their antiques so you could get them from the same supplier.

Aside from antique stores, don't forget to check out flea markets and garage sales. You might find something worth buying at a reasonable price or be able to haggle with the vendor as they also want to get rid of their inventory and still be able to make a profit.

If you are planning to replace some of the items in the doll, make sure that they are just as good as the old ones because this could affect its resale value.

One other venue where you can find antiques is online. Some people like to dispose of what they have through an online auction so just hope that you are the highest bidder among those who have also expressed an interest in the item.

When you have amassed a collection of antiques, make sure they are well preserved. This may prove to be worth it later on should you decided to sell or swap them with something from another hobbyist.

Another thing you have to learn when collecting antiques is spotting an original from a reproduction. This takes time and practice. In the case of old dolls, look at the back because the production date is imprinted there.

Budget is the key for anyone who wants to start an antique collection. If your funds are limited, this could be one factor in making you collect something else than what was originally planned. But if money is no object, then there won't be a problem looking for items both here and abroad.
